St Paul, MN - Stephen Daly McLoone
1953-2026
Stephen Daly McLoone, 73, died peacefully on February 14, 2026. Born to John McLoone III and Kathryn (Daly) McLoone, Steve was the youngest of eight children in a lively Irish Catholic family, where he became known as the peacemaker, the comedian, and the musician.
Music defined much of Steve's life and identity. He performed with numerous bands and musical collaborations including Judd, Zero Ted, Caribou, Club Rock, and Headstone. Whether performing for thousands or a small room, he gave everything he had each night. His energy, voice, and presence left a lasting imprint on Minnesota's music community, earning induction into the Minnesota Country and Rock Hall of Fame, the Iowa Rock Hall of Fame, and the South Dakota Music Hall of Fame. He also produced and recorded music through his Ultimasongs recording and publishing work and supported charitable efforts including the Ultimamission Uganda Mission.
He held a bachelor's degree in kinesiology and maintained a lifelong interest in health and fitness, often encouraging others - famously reminding them simply to "breathe." He shared his talents in many ways, including cooking and caring for others and running a kitchen serving vulnerable youth. He had an easy way of seeing the good in people, listened without judgment, and encouraged others through mistakes and struggles, making many feel understood and welcomed.
Above all, Steve loved being a father and took pride in his children's lives and accomplishments. He was also a devoted grandfather, affectionately known as "Gpop."
He is survived by his children Ian, Kristin, Matthew, and Jeremy McLoone; his former spouse, Lissa Kobin; his partner, Beth Taylor; his grandchildren Savannah, Kylher, Oliver, Scout, and Junius; and his sisters Mary Kaye Perrin, Annie, Margo, and Patty, along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, John McLoone III and Kathryn (Daly) McLoone, and his brothers John, Jerry, and Michael McLoone.
Those who knew Steve remember a one-of-a-kind personality whose energy could fill a room and whose generosity left people feeling seen and welcomed. His music, laughter, and stories remain - a lasting reminder of a life lived with unmistakable enthusiasm and heart.
A Celebration of Steve's life will be held in Waseca with the date to be announced this spring.
