Shakopee, Minnesota - Sister Alice Zachmann, SSND, 100, died April 9, 2026, at Benedictine Living Community - Windermere, Shakopee, Minnesota. Her green burial in the Good Counsel Cemetery, Mankato, was held April 13. Funeral services will be held Monday, May 18, at Windermere Chapel, 1705 Windermere Way, Shakopee, with Sharing of Memories at 10:30; and a Memorial Mass at 11:00. Sister Alice was born in St. Michael Minnesota. She graduated from Good Counsel Academy in 1946 and entered the School Sisters of Notre Dame that same year. She professed First Vows in 1949. From 1949 through 1974 she taught primary and intermediate grades at Catholic elementary schools in Minnesota and Iowa. Following seven years in pastoral ministry, and after a visit to an SSND mission in Guatemala, in 1982 she began a lengthy social justice ministry in which she founded the Guatemala Human Rights Commission/USA (GHRC) with headquarters in Washington D.C. She also advocated for victims of torture and worked for the abolition of torture. She returned to Mankato in 2010 and continued her social justice ministry in a variety of ways, including joining Sister Gladys Schmitz and others in weekly silent protests in downtown Mankato. She moved with other School Sisters of Notre Dame to Shakopee in 2022, and eleven days before her death celebrated her 100th birthday.

Sister Alice is survived by her sisters in community, the School Sisters of Notre Dame and SSND Associates, and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Benno and Bernadine (Wey) Zachmann, her sister Lauretta Hartmann and her brothers Tony, Carl, Frank, Harry and Paul.
