Plymotuh, MN - Professor Johnson A. Afolayan was born on February 2, 1947, in Omu-Aran, Kwara State, Nigeria, to Maroyesa Afolayan and Marion Onibidun Amoke. He began his educational journey at Mokwa Teacher's College and went on to a lifelong career in education, first serving as a school principal in Eruku, Mosudo, and Igbaja.

On December 26, 1972, he married Victoria F. Afolayan. Together, they later immigrated to the United States in pursuit of academic and professional opportunities. He earned his Master of Education (1981) and Education Specialist (1982) degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Stout and his Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from Iowa State University in 1986.

He served as a professor at Auburn University at Montgomery (1987-1991), Minnesota State University Moorhead (1991-1996), and Minnesota State University, Mankato (1996-2020), where he was honored as Professor Emeritus for his lasting impact.

A man of deep Christian faith, he was devoted to worship, Bible study, and fellowship. He was active in the Kiwanis Club, serving as President, and remained closely connected to the African Christian Fellowship of Minnesota. He loved music, reading, and thoughtful conversations on world affairs.

He is survived by his sons, Gideon of Minneapolis and Gabriel (Kali) of Shorewood; his sister, Lydia Wuraola of Ipetu, Nigeria; and his grandchildren, Sonya, Dominique, and Thaddeus. He is also survived by extended family in the United States and Nigeria.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Victoria; his parents; and his brothers, Matthew and Samuel.
