James Dale Roed (Jim) Obituary
Plymouth, MN - Roed, James "Jim" Dale
Age, 69, of Plymouth, passed away peacefully on May 16, 2026.
Jim was born on August 7, 1956, in Northfield to Verland and Mary Roed. He grew up in Mankato and attended Minnesota State University, Mankato before earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Structural Engineering from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. It was there that Jim met and fell in love with Bonnie Jean Mosher. They married on May 23, 1981, and began a life journey together, raising three children and sharing a loving partnership for 45 years.
Jim began his career in 1980 at Ellerbe Becket. In 1984, he co-founded Ericksen Roed & Associates with Bud Ericksen and Tom Amundson. Over a distinguished 37-year career, Jim designed and led thousands of structural engineering projects. He is perhaps best known for designing the structural system for the Target Center and contributing to numerous projects on the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus.
Throughout his career, Jim worked alongside countless clients and colleagues, though he viewed those relationships as far more than professional partnerships. His genuine interest in people fostered lasting friendships that extended beyond the office, leading to hunting and fishing trips, trap shooting leagues, and shared meals filled with stories, laughter, and camaraderie.
Jim possessed a remarkable business sense, but it was his passion for mentoring and teaching that truly defined his legacy. He was deeply committed to developing the next generation of engineers and helped cultivate a culture of learning and support at Ericksen Roed that continues today. Through his calm demeanor, unwavering trust, and constant encouragement, Jim guided and inspired many engineers and designers who carry forward the lessons he so generously shared.
Jim retired in 2017 after being diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. He chose not to let the disease define him and lived each day to the fullest extent possible. His determination and strength were an inspiration to those around him. With Bonnie's steadfast devotion and support, they prioritized creating lasting memories with family and friends. Jim especially cherished time spent with his grandchildren, Naomi and Jack, who lovingly called him "Beba." Jim's generosity, brilliance, and presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Bonnie; children, Chris (Kate), Sara (Ryan) Schabel, and Jon; grandchildren, Naomi and Jack Schabel; sister, Nancy Jo (Neal) Duncanson; brother, Steve; brother-in-law, Lee (Lisa Hannon) Mosher; sisters-in-law, Mary (David) Dunn and Nancy Kleiber; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Verland and Mary Roed; sister-in-law, Gloria Roed; in-laws, Burdette and Lucille Mosher; and nephew, David Kleiber.
