Gary Hudson
Gary Hudson was born on December 7, 1939, to Richard H. Hudson and Violet (Gleason) Hudson in Rochester, Minnesota. He grew up in Windom, Minnesota and graduated from Windom High School in 1957. He matriculated to the University of Minnesota and to Mankato State College and then met the love of his life, Helen. Gary then decided to join the US Marine Corps. After boot camp, Gary served in South Pacific stations including Okinawa, Japan, Philippines, and Viet Nam. Gary returned to the states and was stationed at Camp Pendleton, California. Helen and Gary were married in 1962 while Gary was still in the Marines. The couple moved to Oceanside, California. Gary and Helen returned to Mankato to continue Gary's education and were blessed with the birth of a daughter, Lisa. With a BA in hand, the young family moved to work in Michigan. Gary continued his education at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. An MA degree led to a return to Mankato and the Mankato State counseling center. The couple was blessed with two sons, Jarret and then Christopher. Gary earned a doctorate in counseling psychology from the University of South Dakota. While at Mankato State University, Gary served in several part-time capacities such as: veteran's counselor, orientation director and human subjects research committee chairperson. Gary retired from the faculty as a full professor from the counseling center after 31 years. Retired life led to several different and varied opportunities. With Helen's retirement, in 2002, the pair traveled with their beloved corgis Otto and Hobbs in their motorhome. This unfortunately ended when Gary contracted stage 5 kidney disease. The pair lived happily in Diamond Creek until December 2, 2019 when Gary passed away peacefully at Abbott Northwestern Hospital. Helen and Gary were active members of St. John's Episcopal Church for all of their married life.
Gary is survived by his wife of 57 years, his daughter Lisa and her husband David Olson of Apple Valley, MN, son Jarret Hudson of Mankato, son Christopher Hudson and wife Tina and grandsons Daniel, Andrew and Marvin of Amboy, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents Richard and Violet Hudson.
A memorial service is scheduled for December 13, 2019 at 10:00am at St. John's Episcopal Church, 302 Warren Street, Mankato, MN.

My sympathies on Gary's passing. I will miss kidding with him on the recumbent bikes at Vine. He always had a smile and a kind word. I know these last weeks have been difficult. Wishing you peace and warm memories.

Dear Hudson family,
I am so sorry to hear if Gary’s passing. You were my second family growing up and I have have lovely memories of time spent in your home. Lisa, Dave, Jarret, and Chris, my deepest condolences at the passing of your dad. He was always warm, welcoming, patient, and tolerant of our music, long phone conversations, and antics. Wishing all of you peace and ease as you celebrate his life and enduring legacy.

I am saddened to learn of Gary's death. We lived a few houses from Helen, Gary and the kids during the time of growing up and schooling. Cece, especially was a close friend to Lisa. Gary was ever a kind Dad, professor, and community advocate. May your rich memories comfort you now and in future years.

With his wife, Helen, the pair made wonderful next door neighbors! Moving into Mankato after 55 years on a farm I could not believe how kind and Welcoming they were.
