Arthur Leslie Malzahn
The call was an offer he could not refuse, to reunite with loved ones he had not seen in a very long time, endless access to John Deere "toys", lawns that require no weed whacking and the fishing is prime. The call to a place where his tan will never fade and the beer is always ice cold. His quick wit and sarcasm are always appreciated and fried chicken no longer clogs the arteries ("the grease keeps your body running smooth").
He was given life on June 29, 1944, in Blue Earth, MN. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's UCC in rural Minnesota Lake. He gave his life back Easter Monday April 2, 2018. He was 73.
Sonny loved growing up on the farm, where he was outside with nature and his dogs. He could often be found hunting and fishing with friends.
Art loved his country and served in the army during the Vietnam War. He began his service on July 7, 1965. He came home from Vietnam April 10, 1967, and was honorably discharged the same day.
He was married to Carol Keech, on April 10, 1976 at Peace UCC in Minnesota Lake, where he was a member. Together they had two children, his pride and joy, Megan and Paul.
He loved his small town, knowing all his friends and neighbors, being a member of the Fred K Werner American Legion - Post 287, Wells VFW, and lifetime member of the DAV in Mankato, Festag, his lawn mowing jobs that allowed him to be outside "working" and everything that made Minnesota Lake his lifetime home.
Prior to retirement, Art worked for Reynold's Welding Supply, in Mankato, MN, where he was a purchasing agent and the resident Arthur Fonzarelli "The Fonz." He enjoyed the customers and the long-time friends he made during the many years he worked there. He loved his cats who were "highly trained, listened well and never talked back."
He loved his family above all: his wife Carol of Minnesota Lake MN; daughter Megan (Mike) Urban of Madison Lake, MN, and son Paul (Jacqie) Malzahn of Janesville, MN; his grandkids: Kelsie (Urban), Connor (Urban), and James (Malzahn) who were his "bright shining stars;" his sister Miriam AKA "Charlie" (Robert) Feist of North Mankato, MN; father-in-law Leonard (Marcia) Keech of St. James, MN; sister-in-law Sharon (Mike) Eder of Aitkin, MN, brother-in-law John (Janice) Keech of St. James, MN, sister-in-law Kathy (Michael) Pickard of Lakeville, MN, and brother-in-law Bob (Denise) Keech of Butterfield, MN; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Art now joins his parents Art and Margaret (Quist) Malzahn, mother-in-law Lila Keech and brother-in-law Billy Keech. He'd say "don't cry for me...I had a good run. Turn out the lights, the party's over." Although we know, his true party has only begun.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, April 10, 2018 at 2:00 PM at Peace UCC in Minnesota Lake with Rev. Joy Bruder officiating. Visitation will be held Monday, April 9, 2018 at Peace UCC, from 4 - 7 PM, and will continue one hour prior to the service on Tuesday. Interment will be at Peace UCC Cemetery in Minnesota Lake.
