Phyllis (Phyl) McFarling of Mankato, Minnesota died unexpectedly after elective surgery at Abbott Northwestern Hospital on Saturday, April 29th 2017. Services will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, May 6th at Woodland Hills Funeral Home, 1605 Woodland Avenue, Mankato, Minnesota. Phyl was born on August 11, 1941 in Albert Lea, Minnesota, to Nels and Louise (Piepgras) Jensen. The family later moved to Jackson, Minnesota, where Phyl graduated from high school. She then attended the Naeve Hospital nursing program, where she earned her RN degree. She married Lyle McFarling on February 3rd, 1962. After living in several communities in Minnesota, California and Iowa, they settled in Mankato in 1971, with their three children.
Phyl worked at Immanuel St. Joseph's Hospital in Mankato, and for much of her career she was a Charge Nurse. She retired in 2010 after a career of 30 years. She had many talents and interests including piano, knitting, needlepoint, golf and bowling. She was a voracious reader, loved history, could fix nearly anything, and liked doing only the most difficult crossword puzzles. In what little spare time she had, she loved watching old movies and musicals. Her love for animals was boundless, especially spending time with her grand dogs and cats. Her family and friends miss her terribly.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Sandra Rollins and Mary Carlsen. She is survived by her children: Eric McFarling (Sartell), Shannon McFarling (Mankato) and Julie McFarling (Burnsville), her brother Bruce (Rebecca) Jensen (Denver, CO) and five grandchildren; Nick Enright; Kelsey McFarling; Taylor McFarling; Dylan McFarling; Chase Hubbard.
