Marie L. Crawford (Fahling), age 76, of Mankato, Minnesota, passed away on Tuesday, March 7th, 2017 due to complications of two strokes. She was surrounded by family when she passed away peacefully at Mayo Clinic Health Systems-St. Mary's Campus in Rochester.
A Celebration of Marie's life will be Saturday, March 25, 2017 at 11:00 AM at Woodland Hills Chapel in Mankato, MN with Pastor Michelle Hargrave officiating. Interment will be private.
Marie's family will greet friends on Saturday morning from 9:00 A.M. until the hour of services at the funeral home. The family requests that you please wear bright colors in memory of Marie.
Marie Louise, was born on March 26th, 1940, to Owin Linn Fahling and Ethel Marguerite (Ainger) Fahling in Frostburg, Maryland. Marie graduated from Libertyville High School, Libertyville, IL, in 1958. She graduated from the University of Illinois in 1962 with a BA in Social Science: History Teaching. In 1963, she was married to Gerald (Jerry) Crawford in Peoria, Il. Marie's first job was a middle school history teacher in Peoria, Il. They moved to New Ulm, MN in 1967 and she continued teaching through 1968. In 1969, they adopted their first of two children and Marie became a stay-at-home mom. In 1975, the couple moved to Mankato, MN where Marie became actively involved in their children's school, Wilson Community School. Marie obtained her second BS degree in Accounting from Mankato State University in 1989. Throughout her remaining career, she was an accountant for CADA, supervisor for the Foster Grandparent Program, and a Consumer Council Educator for the Advocacy Center for Long-Term Care. After retirement in 2003, Marie volunteered at several organizations including nursing homes, elementary schools, Meals on Wheels and many others. Marie enjoyed outings with friends and family, her dogs, poetry, riding on the back of Jerry's motorcycle, making beaded jewelry, crafts with her grandchildren and shopping. There wasn't a consignment shop she drove by that she didn't stop at to browse. She was also active in politics and spent many hours with social action groups over the years.
She is survived by her husband, Gerald James Crawford, of Mankato, MN; son, Nathan James Crawford of Mankato, MN; daughter, Nicole Linn (Bartt) Pierce of Shoreview, MN; grandchildren Khadijah Marie Pierce and Hayden Avery Pierce of Shoreview, MN; Siblings, James Fahling of Kentucky, Cheryl (Ken) Price of Illinois, John (Paz) Fahling of Hawaii, Nanette (Charles) Cantrell of Georgia, Gerald (Colleen) Fahling of Texas; sister-in-law Colleen Fahling of Kentucky; many nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Owin and Ethel Fahling; mother and father-in law James and Evelyn Crawford.
