Julian John Goettl, 93, of Mankato, Minnesota passed away on January 10, 2017 at Oaklawn Health Care Center in Mankato. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, January 12, 2017 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 632 S. Broad Street, Mankato, Minnesota. Visitation resumes one hour before Mass at the church. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 13, 2017 at St. John Catholic Church in Mankato, Minnesota with Father John Kunz. Interment to follow at Calvary Cemetery in Mankato.
Julian was born February 7, 1923, on a farm north of Mankato to Louis Paul and Marie Magdelin (Hartung) Goettl. He attended St. Peter & Paul's School in Mankato from 1930-1938. Staying at home to help farm until 1944 as he worked for two different farmers until drafted into the Army. The Queen Mary took them to Clide, Scotland in route to LeHarve, France. He was in the replacements for the Battle of the Bulge. Julian was discharged on July 10, 1946.
Julian met Mary Gertrude Lorentz in 1946 and united in marriage on May 25, 1948 at the old St. John's Catholic Church by Monsignor Philip Matthews.
Julian owned the Hilltop Texaco station October 1, 1947 to December 31, 1954 on Madison Ave. In April 1955 they bought a farm north of Waseca, MN. Working the land for 30 years and built a new house there in 1958. He also worked at Birds Eye for 28 ½ years and raised three children. Retiring in 1985 they built a house in Morristown, MN. They enjoyed traveling and were snow birds in Arizona for 14 years where they built two more houses at Rio Rico, AZ. Julian was a member of Catholic Aid, the Knights of Columbus, member of the Auto Restorers Car Club of Southern MN. Enjoyed listening to old time music, volunteering at St. John's Church, as well helping Mary with her knitting and quilting. After Mary passed away he helped out giving rides to the nuns at Good Counsel. He also had a passion for playing cards often.
Julian is survived by his children; Julia Ann (Wayne) Knauss of Hawley, James Julian (Terrie Sikel) Goettl of Waseca and Myra Louise (Ronald) Jongbloedt of Garden City; brothers Cletus (Elaine) Goettl of North Mankato, Roger Goettl of Le Center, Louis (Donna) Goettl of Eagle Lake and Richard (Phyllis) Goettl of Mankato, Sisters; Adeline Sieberg of Eagle Lake and Mary Lou (Marlyn) Denn of Waseca; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Julian is preceded in death by his wife Mary (Lorentz) Goettl in 2003; one grand-daughter; two brothers; Bernard Goettl and Wilfrid Goettl; two sisters Elaine (Goettl) Sweiger and Lorraine (Goettl) Fredrick; three brothers-in-law Gerald Fredrick, Curtis Sieberg and Francis Sweiger; three sisters-in-law Delores Goettl, LaVonne Goettl and Sandra Goettl.
