Mankato resident Cecil J. Gates, 98, died Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at Oaklawn Rehabilitation Center under Mayo Clinic Health System Hospice care.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, January 23rd, 2017 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Mankato with Rev. Adam Matheny, officiating. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the church. Following the service will be a luncheon. Burial with military honors will be held at Woodland Hills Memorial Park. Woodland Hills Funeral Home is handling services.
Cecil J. Gates was born on May 19th, 1918 to James M. and Stella R. (Steel) Gates in Mankato, Minnesota. He graduated from Mankato High School in 1936. He flew B-17 bombers in World War II and retired with the rank of Lt. Colonel. After the war he taught flying for 4 years. He worked for Great Lakes Pipeline for 12 years. He worked for Rosemont Engineering for 2 years and Mankato Citizens Telephone Company for 15 years. He played golf. He married Beverly J. Bucher in 1948.
Cec is survived by daughter, Donna (Dale) Templin of Mankato; son, James (Carolyn) Gates of Mankato; grandson, Dana (Jennifer) Gates of Winnebago; granddaughters, Kimberly L. Gates and Stephanie D. Gates of Mankato; brother-in-law, Duane (Colleen) Bucher of Owatonna and sister, Hazel Finkle of Solvang, California. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bev; sisters, Irma Anderson and Verna Lorenz.
