Ben was born on September 8, 1924, in Beauford Township, MN to Benjamin and Hattie (Templin) Carey. He was raised in Mapleton and graduated from the Mapleton School District. Ben married Inga Louise (Seljeseth) on April 30, 1973. He worked for the highway department, and as an executive for the Department of Transportation for 42 years.
Ben loved buying new cars, traveling, tending to his flower garden, bird-watching, and watching sports. He was a faithful, devout Catholic, and was always a gentleman. Ben was a very social man, and always had a story to tell. He was full of facts and could tell you something that happened 60 years ago, but could not remember what he had for lunch each day.
Ben is survived by his nieces, Harriet Peterson, Joanne Rounkles, Frances Davern, and Patricia Grothe; nephew, Benjamin Grothe; step-daughter, Margarite Beber; and step-grandchildren, Teresa Skobba, Amy Butler, Jane Butler, Nathan Chapman, Andrew Chapman, and Joseph Butler.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Madeline Grothe; step-children, Antonia Sharits, Sigard Chapman, and Kim Chapman.
