Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and retired Mankato High School English teacher, Inella K. Burns, 99, died on May 26, 2016 at Water's Edge, Mankato. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, June 1 at 2:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church, Mankato.
Inella Kathleen (Shaneyfelt) Burns was born on April 9, 1917 in Dalton, NE, the daughter of Joseph and Erma (May) Shaneyfelt.
A 1934 graduate of Hastings NE High School, Inella went on to receive her BA degree from Hastings College in 1938. After graduation she taught at high schools in Grafton and Auburn, NE and in Manhattan, KS where she met Warrant Officer Bert E. Burns of Kenosha, WI. They were married on October 21, 1944 in the US Army Chapel at Camp Van Dorn, MS. During WW II Inella worked as a laboratory assistant in army hospitals. Bert and Inella moved to Mankato in 1950 where Bert joined the faculty of the Geography Department of Mankato State Teachers College.
Inella taught English in St. Clair from 1951 - 1953 and at Mankato High School from 1954 - 1976. She served as Chair of the Mankato District 77 Secondary Language Arts Department from 1966-1974 and as American Field Service Coordinator in the early 1960's. She also supplemented her education through taking graduate courses at Mankato State University, attending the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference at Middlebury College, VT and participating in numerous Elderhostels.
Travel was an integral part of Inella and Bert's lives. They ventured throughout the US, Europe, Asia, South America, Australia, Russia and the Balkan countries. A highlight was traveling around Europe in 1961 for four months with their daughters, Janet and Kathleen. Taking their own car equipped with camping gear, they boarded the Queen Mary I en route and returned on the Queen Elizabeth II.
Inella enjoyed many interests ? reading, cooking, sewing, writing, genealogy and historic preservation among them. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Mankato, the Mankato Art History Club (Past President), and the Blue Earth County Historical Society where she wrote many articles for their publications.
