Sister M. Honora's Story
Sister M. Honora Elsen, SSND, 99, died Friday, December 29, 2017, at Good Counsel, Mankato. Her Funeral Mass is Thursday, January 4, 10:30 a.m. in Good Counsel Chapel. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m., Wednesday evening at Good Counsel, with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before the funeral.
Sister Honora (Cecilia Elsen) was born in Loretto, Minnesota in 1918 to John and Elizabeth (Becker) Elsen. She graduated from Good Counsel Academy and entered the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1935. She served as a high school teacher of religion and home economics, as a postulant and vocation director, and as a visitor to the elderly. In the Mankato area she taught at Good Counsel Academy (1940-54) and worked in various capacities on Good Counsel Hill (1962-71 and 1987-90).
She is survived by two sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews, and her sisters in community, the School Sisters of Notre Dame. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and three brothers.
