Sister Brenda's Story
Sister Brenda Penning, SSND, 83, died Thursday, December 28, 2017, at Good Counsel, Mankato. Her Funeral Mass is Wednesday, January 3, 10:30 a.m. in Good Counsel Chapel. A prayer service of remembrance will be held at 9:00 on Wednesday, followed by visitation until the funeral.
Sister Brenda (Dorothy Penning) was born in Ashton, Iowa in 1934 to Lawrence and Anna (Schwarz) Penning. She entered the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1958 and professed first vows in 1960. She served as an elementary and junior high teacher, a parish administrator and a parish pastoral minister. In the Mankato area she was the program director for Good Counsel Education Center (1983-87) and served as pastoral associate at St. Joseph the Worker (1999-2002). In 1995, she was named Parish Director for the parishes in Lismore and St. Killian, the first person in the Diocese of Winona to be appointed to this position.
She is survived by three sisters, nieces and nephews, and her sisters in community, the School Sisters of Notre Dame. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and three brothers.
