Roger Scott Thiem

Roger Scott Thiem, age 74, died September 8th in North Mankato, MN after a short struggle with pulmonary fibrosis.
Scott was born to Emrold and Shirley Thiem in Rochester, MN. He graduated from Mankato State University with a B.A. in 1967 and a M.A. in 1968. He then entered the U.S. Coast Guard serving four years in Alameda, CA. Scott married Barbara (Ruegg) in 1968 and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary earlier this year.
Scott and Barb returned to Mankato, MN in 1973 where Scott managed Vogel Outdoor Advertising Company until he retired. Scott was an active member of the Mankato Rotary Club. In retirement, Scott volunteered at the YMCA in the Big Brothers and Y's Men programs. He was a member of the North Mankato Parks and Bike Commissions. He was also active in the Mankato Paddling and Outing Club, all in pursuit of his love of the outdoors.
Scott is survived by his wife Barb; daughters Erika Thiem of Excelsior, MN and Amy (James) Hannaman of Saint Clair, MN; granddaughters Ava, Morgan, Jada and Macy; siblings Gary (Kay) Thiem of El Dorado Hills, CA, Bradley Thiem of Wabasha, MN, Janet (Ken) Helder of Kasson, MN and their families. He is preceded in death by his brother Alan and his parents.
Scott was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (937 Charles Ave, Mankato, MN) where he will be remembered on Saturday, September 22nd with a gathering starting at 10:00 am and service at 11:00 am. A private burial will take place at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials should go to The Superior Hiking Trail Association (https://superiorhiking.org/donate).
