Dick was born May 16, 1931, in Minneota, MN. When he was a young child, he was lovingly adopted by Jacob and Theresa (Hirtling) Longenecker. He attended Loyola School and later earned his GED from Mankato High School. On January 16, 1951, Dick joined the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged on June 16, 1951. He was united in marriage to Kathleen Hieman on July 10, 1954, at St. John the Baptist Church in Mankato.
For over 50 years, until his retirement, Dick worked as a crane operator for the Local Operator Engineers 49 Union. He also was a realtor and broker for 17 years for Longenecker Realty and a bondsman for 10 years. Dick was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 11, charter member of the Mankato Township United, St. Joseph the Worker Church and School, and AM Exchange.
Above all, Dick loved spending time with his family. He was kind hearted, nonjudgmental, and had a witty sense of humor. He will be sadly missed by his wife of 64 years, Kathleen Longenecker of Mankato; 7 children, Terri (Warren) Michels, Sue Morrison, Julie Longenecker, Jeff (Paul Robinson) Longenecker, Patty (Jerry) Balster, Jeannie (Jon) Putnam, and Annie (Joe) Taschetta; 17 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren with one on the way; a sister, Gloria Schwab; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Terri and family:

I only met Dick once, but he made a huge impression. That jaunty tip of his hat in the younger picture above, and that beautiful smile in the more contemporaneous one, epitomise that impression. Wish I'd had the opportunity to know him better. My sincere condolences on your loss.

My condolences to the Longenecker family. I did not know Dick until coffee in the afternoon but Dick was always a determined man.
