Nadine's Story

Nadine Elizabeth Schulte (Fenske) age 86, died peacefully at Ecuman Pathstone Health Care Facility on Monday, January 22nd. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1pm Saturday, January 27 at Ss. Peter and Pauls Catholic Church. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services at the church. Interment will be at Woodland Hills Memorial Park. Woodland Hills Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements. Memorials are preferred to Good Council Alumni fund or American Legion Unit 11 Auxiliary.
Nadine was born in Mankato on Sept 7, 1931 to parents Albert F. and Jenny R. (Schobrich) Mayer. She was raised in North Mankato by her father and after age 7 her step mother Betty (Halter) Mayer. Attending Holy Rosary School and graduating from Good Council Academy class of 1949. She worked at Bretts Department Store in accounting and married Norbert F. Woitas on August 30, 1950. They had eleven children, living in Mankato and Slayton, MN. They divorced in 1976,
She married C.R. Red Schulte in Las Vegas, Nevada in 1978, where they were co-owners of a neighborhood bar, Franks Bar, on Tropicana Ave with another Mankato couple, Andy and Rosie Schuster. Nadine also worked at the Tropicana Country Club coming to know many celebrities. They moved back to Mankato for health reasons, where Red died in 1990.
She married Melroy W. Fenske in 1995, retaining her name of Nadine Schulte. Mel and Nadine toured the nation attending military reunions and meeting with service friends Mel made before returning from the U.S. Airforce. Travel also included attending National American Legion Conventions and carrying the U.S. Flag in parades. Nadine was last employed at Carlson Craft as a proof reader. She also worked as a banquet manager at the Morson-Ario VFW, Kato Ballroom, and Inn Town Hotel Restaurant as a waitress.
She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 11 in Mankato and was their treasurer for many years until two years ago.
She enjoyed designing posters for Legion events and custom designed and made all of her birthday and greeting cards on the computer. Nadine also enjoyed reading, indoor gardening, painting figurines, and playing cards with her husband and brothers. She insisted on order and cleanliness through her life. Her mantra was everything has its place.
Nadine is survived by her children, Therese Woitas, Mike Woitas and Barb of Cleveland, Jenny Pehrson, Margaret Robinson of Chaska, Donna (Kashi) Misra of Spanish Fort, Alabama, Judy (David) Little of St. Paul, Lois (Donn) Vetter, Georgia Woitas of Minnetonka, Joni Woitas and Kathy of St. Croix Falls; daughter in-law, Lesa Woitas of Ellsworth, Wisconsin; her husband Mels two children, Cathy (John) Krause and Bob Fenske of New Hampton, Iowa; twenty three grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; and brothers, Roger Mayer and Bob (Patricia) Mayer.
She was preceded in death by her parents; step mother; two children, Christine Woitas and Charles Woitas; grandson, Jonathan Woitas: her husband, Mel Fenske, and sister in-law Mary Jane Mayer.
