Menter "Matt"'s Story
In our Dad's final prayer on Friday, he thanked God for His love and salvation, for his dear family, friends and that he is blessed, blessed, blessed, blessed, blessed.
Menter "Matt" Harvard Mathison joined his Lord and Savior on the 20th of November 2017. He enjoyed 90 years of life. Matt was born on September 25, 1927 in Hendricks, MN. He graduated from Hendricks High School in 1945 and then joined the U.S. Army serving on the USS Hope Medical Ship. He was a graduate of South Dakota State University in 1951. He married the love of his life and best friend, Stena Marie (Hansen) Mathison. They were married for 68 years, spending the majority of their married life in Mankato, MN and Sioux Falls, SD.
Matt loved and enjoyed people; he always had wise words of counsel to all who sought his guidance. He began his working career as a pharmaceutical salesman, but spent the majority of his career working as President of Brown Drug Company, Sioux Falls, SD...only to retire and then work another 10 years for Sullivan Imports. Though he was a good businessman, he was most respected for his sense of integrity.
Matt lived a life devoted to the Lord Jesus Christ and served Him by serving in his church. Over the years, Matt taught youth and adult Sunday school classes; he was a board member, a church elder, a "good and giving friend" to many - at both Grace Baptist Church in Mankato, MN and Central Baptist Church in Sioux Falls, SD. He and Stena welcomed people of all ages into their home and gave of themselves to care for others. Above all, he was a friend to everyone because he loved people.
Matt is preceded in death by his parents, Theodore and Ida Mathison; a daughter-in-law, Lona Burnett Mathison; and several aunts and uncles. He is survived by his wife Stena and their children: Dr. Gregory Mathison and his wife Patricia of Orlando, FL; LTC Mark Mathison (Retired) and his wife Patricia of Huntsville, AL; Cindy Mathison Hendrix and husband Dr. Paul Hendrix of Tulsa, OK; LtCol. Jeffery Mathison (Retired) and wife Yissel of Warner Robbins, GA; and Brett Mathison and wife Ann of Sioux Falls, SD. Matt loved to spend time with his 13 grandchildren: Jennifer, Jessica, Greg Jr., Julio, Katie, Kelsey, Joey, Nicolle, Stena, Jeffery Jr., Matthew, Nicholas and Sarah, and with his 14 great-grandchildren: Connor, Kyle, Marissa, Grace, Christian, Jack, Lexi, Mikaela, Riley, Ellie, Kensington, Kade, Lucy and Amos. He always welcomed them into his home and made every effort to visit them in their homes. He is a Husband, Dad, and a "Papa" and will be greatly missed.
Funeral services will begin at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 25, 2017 at Central Church in Sioux Falls. Visitation will be on Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at the church. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. www.heritagesfsd.com.
