Mechthild Becker

Events

Meggy Becker left us on August 13, one week after her birthday. As Meggy celebrated her birthdays, one after another, the age she gave changed little. She would have a garden party each year... she wouldn't call them birthday parties, or tell people it was her birthday. She wanted the celebration to be for everyone. Throughout her life, as those birthdays and parties came and passed, she always lived with a vibrant energy and an adventurous spirit.

Meggy was born and grew up in Hessen, Germany to Hugo and Paula Becker. Meggy moved to America in 1976 and studied at Mankato State University. She was a photographer - a storm chaser even, a Spanish teacher, a German teacher, a rock-hound, and a real estate agent. Meggy was beloved by her family, her friends, her students, and fellow rock-hounds across Minnesota.

She was a force to be reckoned with. Meggy would barter for deals, campaign for her causes and her candidates, and sell raffle tickets at Rockbend. "The squeaky wheel gets the grease" as she liked to say. She was not afraid to be that squeaky wheel and used her passion and persistence to support the cause of the underdog - whomever she felt that might be.

Meggy fought a long battle with cancer. She lived on - productive and outgoing - for many years after her diagnosis. Her love of life and irrepressible spirit shone through. The happiness she brought to others continues on for all of us that live in her afterglow.

Meggy was preceded in death by her parents Hugo and Paula, her sister Ingeborg, and her dogs Rio and Ria. She is survived by her son Bjorn Becker-Linder and his father Bruce Linder, and by her dear friend Craig Nagel. She is also survived in Germany by her brothers Edwin Becker, Michael Becker with his wife Nicole, and their respective children.

Meggy was something else...met her so many years back, in the river valley, where so many progressive folk found each other...one did not forget Meggy, once you met. She was such a curious creature, yearned to know you, learn more, what is that English word you are using, what does it mean? She laughed easily, including at herself. Always an endearing quality in a friend. So much love to you Craig and to Meggy's family and friends.

Meggy joined the library book club about 6 years ago. She shared her stories, knowledge and laughter with us. She was an avid reader, good thinker, music lover, hard worker and a dear friend who was fluent with English, German, and Spanish. Meggy will be missed.

I knew Meggy as a sweet soul who happened to be a fellow rockhound. She was FULL of life and shared her zest for life even when she was FIGHTING for her life. Rest in Peace(+), Meggy. May Light Perpetual shine upon you.

I met her by accident but we became fast friends. I watched her fight for life while she taught me how to live. I am going to miss this free spirit! I am so lucky to know her!

Meggy was an amazing lady and great friend. We first met her while hunting for amethyst in Thunder Bay, Ontario and she made an immediate impression. She happily talked with our daughter, who was learning to speak German at the time, so she could practice. We have thoroughly enjoyed our friendship with Meggy, Craig and Bjorn over the years. Meggy will be missed by many. Our prayers will be with you during this time of grief. Hugs to Craig and Bjorn.

This obituary is a wonderful tribute to Meggy. She was a beacon of light, and a lot of fun. We worked together about 35 years ago, nights at the state hospital . She had her van and her dog. Seems like it was very recently that she was selling raffle tickets at Rock Bend folk festival. She always remembered to stop and say hello. She will be missed by so many including myself.

I am so very sorry and my sincere condolences go out to the Becker-Linder, Nagel, and Becker families and to all who loved, respected and admired Meggy's wit, charm, and outspoken sincerity.
The Great Beyond gained one of the good ones and back here she will be sorely missed.
