Cleveland resident, Marilyn Marie (Kopp) Schmidt, 89, died Sunday, February 18, 2018, in Mankato. Visitation will be held Thursday, February 22, 2018, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., at the Church of the Nativity in Cleveland. Mass of Christian Burial immediately following visitation at the church, Father James Adams officiating. Burial is at Calvary Cemetery, Scotch Lake, Cleveland. St. Peter Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.
Marilyn was born April 27, 1928, to Simon Peter and Clara Josephine (Weltsch) Kopp, in New Ulm. She attended 3 different grade schools, as her parents lived on 5 different farms during her childhood. She completed grade school in Nicollet, and graduated from St. Peter High School.
Marilyn married George Raymond Schmidt on August 11, 1950, in Cleveland. In 1960, they purchased a farm in Cleveland Township on the Southeast side of Scotch Lake. She worked at the Nicollet County Courthouse for many years. Later she was employed at the Holiday House for 10 years, after which she worked as a secretary to the Superintendent at the Cleveland Public School.
George and Marilyn moved to the town of Cleveland in 1985. In April, 2015, they moved to Ecumen Prairie Hill, in St. Peter. Marilyn enjoyed dancing, sewing, crossword puzzles, taking bus trips to Mystic Lake, and shopping with her daughters at Herberger's.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents; her husband and a sister, Gladys O'Rear. She is survived by three daughters, Patricia (Jerry) Scheffert of Le Center, Cheryl (Robert) Evenson of Mankato, Cynthia (Thomas) McCabe of Cleveland; one son, Scott (Debra) Schmidt of Cleveland; 8 grandchildren, Ryan (Keri) Evenson, Jennifer (Ryan) Ryg, Jamie (Allison) Schmidt, Randee (Shawn) Onken, Ashley (Jeremy) Clifton, Dana (Chad) Schmidt, Nicole McCabe and Whitney McCabe; 16 great grandchildren, Mason, Madison, Olivia, Ryley, Avery, Owen, Elise, Blake, Carsyn, Ava, Adelynn, Cody, Autumn, Harper, Rowen and Dylan; one brother, Lester (Leola) Kopp of North Mankato; one sister, Elizabeth Karnowski of California, and by nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
