Lee John Bengtson of Montevideo MN (formerly Mankato) passed away on Monday September 4, 2017 at St. Cloud Hospital at the age of 90. He was born November 16, 1926, to Gastavv and Bessie (Benson) Bengtson in Mankato MN.
At a young age Lee lost his parents and was raised by his beloved sister Violet and her husband Berthold Heyn of Mankato MN. He talked fondly of them and was aware of the sacrifices they made to keep family together. He felt grateful to them as an adult for the unselfish love and stability they provided in his life. He carried those values through his own life as he watched over and helped family members who had needs.
In 1949 he married Mavis Oman, of Dawson MN. They made a home in Montevideo for a short time while Lee was working as a plumber. Shortly after, returned to the Mankato area- making homes in Kasota and Mankato. Lee earned his Master of Plumbing license and was a member of the of the Mankato Plumbers & Pipefitters. He enjoyed his work and co-workers and always had a story or a joke to share. In earlier years Lee and Mavis enjoyed fishing, traveling across the United States, cutting wood, and took pride caring of their home and pets. More than anything, they loved being together. Visiting family, parents, siblings, aunts and uncles were important to Lee and he always welcomed opportunities to do so. Many times there was a project in mindand he visited with his tools in hand, eager to dig in and do something that would improve the quality of someone else's life. His industrious nature was a source of happiness for him after retirement. He remained an example of a loving husband until his wife passed in 2016.
Lee was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his 7 siblings. Local remaining family include Ken(Shirley) Heyn previously of Rapidan, now of McAllen Texas and Ken's daughter Val (Steve) Laborde and children, Brandon, Lexi and Brooke of Rapidan, a nephew, Michael (Eva Lou) Brula formerly of Mankato, now living in Schertz, TX. He will be missed by all who knew him.
