Larry Marvin Van Buskirk of Ottawa Village, Le Sueur County, MN, passed away on Friday evening, June 23, 2017 at the Belle Plaine Lutheran Home. He was 78 years old.
Larry was born to parents Berman and Margaret Van Buskirk on November 20, 1938 in Kasota Township, MN. Larry grew up in the village of Ottawa, and attended elementary school at several country schools in Le Sueur County, and High School in the City of Le Sueur. In 1955 Larry joined the US Navy where he served the United States for four years.
Larry married Betty Kathrine Collins of Henderson, MN on May 7, 1966. After living in Shakopee for 23 years they moved to the village of Ottawa near Le Sueur, MN, where they built the home that Larry was living in at the time of his death. Betty passed away on November 28, 2000.
Larry spent most of his working life in the manufacturing industry as a machine operator, working for companies such as Artic Cat and Wenco. For many years after retirement he enjoyed volunteering at a thrift store in Mankato, MN.
Larry was an active man with many interests. He enjoyed searching for treasure with his metal detector, and was very proud of many of the things he found over the years. Larry was also a collector of antiques, oddities of all kinds, especially things he thought were truly unique. He particularly liked to collect military paraphernalia, and over the years had collected many items of interest.
Larry was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; Father, Berman R. Van Buskirk, Mother, Margaret Christensen, and Stepmother, Teresa Van Buskirk; Sister, Trudy Van Olson; brothers-in-law, Charles Hildebrandt (Jeans husband), Gene Bakke (Jeans husband), Dick Collins (Kitty Jos husband), and Harold Curtis (Marvels husband).
Larry is survived by his stepson, Larry Koestler; his brothers, Alan (Bonnie) Van Buskirk, Berman Van Buskirk, and Mike (Shirley) Christensen; sisters, Jean Hildebrandt, Myra Van Buskirk, Sandy (Terry) Hanson; brothers-in-law, Tom Collins and Joe (Darlene) Collins; sisters-in-law, Jean Bakke, Kitty Jo Collins and Marvel Curtis.
A memorial service to celebrate Larrys life will take place at the Kolden Funeral Home in Le Sueur, MN at 11:00AM Friday June 30th. Visitation with family and friends will start one hour before the service. Following the service, Interment will be in the Ottawa Village Cemetery. A luncheon will follow at the United Methodist Church in le Sueur. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Larrys life.
