Jan M. Zender

November 09, 1956 - October 04, 2018

Jan was born on November 9, 1956 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota, the daughter of Rollie and Ethel (Hillegonds) Roe, and grew up in Grey Eagle, Minnesota. After graduation, she attended the University of Minnesota - Duluth for two years. She transferred to St. Cloud State University after her mother passed to be closer to her dad and younger sister, June. She graduated in 1979, and went on to work for the League of Minnesota Cities in Minneapolis. A few years later she enrolled in the law school at the University of Minnesota. Upon graduation in 1985, Jan clerked for Judge Mork in Freeborn County, and then moved to St. James, Minnesota, where she practiced law and met the love of her life, Gus Zender.
Gus and Jan were married on July 25, 1987 in the First Presbyterian Church. The couple spent the next three decades serving the community in countless ways with a variety of organizations, including the First Presbyterian Church and St. James Rotary. While Jan was an excellent attorney, talented gardener and avid reader, her absolute pride and joy were her daughters, Allison and Emma.
Her life reflected her belief that it was more blessed to give than to receive. She touched countless lives and will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Her life was marked by service to her community, dedication to her clients, and intense love and loyalty for her family and friends.
She is survived by her husband, Gus; daughters, Allison and Emma; sister, June and husband Les Tschida; stepmother, Marcy Roe; brothers in law; David and wife, Joyce Zender, Charlie and wife, Vicki, Zender, Terry and wife, Ellen Burke, Rick and wife, Claudine Zender; stepbrothers, Roger Notch and Bob (Tammy) Notch; stepsisters, Deb Payonk and Nancy (Torky) Bartos, and other relatives.
She is preceded in death by her mother and father, Ethel and Rollie; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Stan and Agnes; sister-in-law, Peggy; and stepsister-in-law, Lois.

I'm very sorry to hear this sad news. Jan and I became friends when we worked together for a few years in the early '80s. She was smart, with a great sense of humor and a quick smile, and as nice a person as I've ever met. Condolences to Jan's family and friends.
