James "Jim"'s Story

James Spenger, 69, of Mankato, died Saturday, April 22, 2017 at Mayo Clinic Hospital-Methodist Campus in Rochester. Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, April 28 at Hosanna Lutheran Church, Mankato with Rev. Mike Omtvedt, officiating. Interment will be at Woodland Hills Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Thursday at Woodland Hills Funeral Home and will continue 1 hour prior to the service at church.
Jim was born March 9, 1948 in Mankato to Lyle "Bud" and Geraldine (Nelson) Spenger. He graduated from Mankato High School and then attended Mankato State. He married Joni Jamieson on September 7, 1991 in Vail, CO. He worked with his dad at Key City Insurance and later purchased the business from him. Jim loved taking trips to Canada to hunt and fish, and his accuracy with a gun was impeccable earning him a national trap shooting title. He also liked golf, Coors Lite, and his Labrador retrievers. Jim was very patriotic, belonging to the American Legion and VFW, Eagles, Shriners, Masons and was an avid supporter of Ducks Unlimited. Most of all he loved spending time with his family. Jim was highly respected by all the insurance companies he worked with and served on the boards of many of them.
He is survived by his wife, Joni of Mankato; daughters, Brooke (Troy) Stenzel of Fairmont, Katie Spenger of Crystal, Elizabeth "Boo Boo" Spenger of North Mankato, Jade "Toad" (Abner) Rojas of Savage; grandchildren, Nevaeh Spenger, Aaris White, Ethan Stenzel, and Kellen Stenzel; sister, Barbie Anderson of Mankato; many nieces, nephews and cousins; sisters-in-law; brothers-in-law; the son he never had, Luke; as well as many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers-in-law, Jamie, Charlie and Larry; and "Grandma" Marge.
