Hildegard's Story

Text size

Hildegard Gushurst passed peacefully on February 16 at Pathstone Living, Mankato. She is survived by three sons, four grandchildren and one great grandson. She was a child of a different time and culture. Born in Lithuania on June 8, 1925 and the oldest of 3 siblings, she grew up on a farm and knew hard work early on. As a teenager, she was separated from her family when World War II broke out in 1939, ultimately surviving those dark years. She recounted stories of surviving bomb raids, being shot at, working in a bomb factory, surviving Dresden's bombing and escaping Czechoslovakia before the fall of the German Reich. But, she lived to see brighter days. In 1947 in Berchtesgaden, Germany, she met and married her first husband, Gilbert Cope, an American GI. They settled in Denver with their two children then, Ronald (Santa Rosa, CA) and Peter (Huntington, NY). Her husband passed in 1956. She later remarried, to William Gushurst, and had one son, Alan (Pleasanton, CA). The family settled in Mankato, MN, in the mid 60's, and she lived there the rest of her life. William pre-deceased her in 2009.

As a member of the Mankato Country Club, she played in many golf tournaments throughout southern Minnesota. She bowled in a couples league for many years, played duplicate bridge and earned many masters points. She even took her then middle school son, Alan, to play in duplicate tournaments at Mankato State. An avid investor, she started an investment club, often seen getting stock quotes and sharing her stock picks with others. An occasional but avid gambler, she picked winning slot machines and hit more than her fair share of jackpots. A wife, a mother, an independent spirit, she was unique and special in many ways. In addition to her grandchildren (Will, Noah, Alexandra, Peter Jr.) and great grandson (Nathan), she is survived by her sons Ronald Cope, Peter Cope, and Alan Gushurst. Rest in peace, you will be missed.
