Helen's Story

Text size

Helen Beatrice Atkins Rebstock died October 21, 2017 at her home in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She was born in Delevan, Minnesota, daughter of Charles and Delelah Atkins. She graduated from Garden City High School with honors and worked briefly in Los Angeles before returning home and settling in Mankato. There she met and married her husband of 62 years, Dr. Charles Wesley Rebstock, who was a secondary school social studies teacher, Blue Earth County Superintendent of Schools, and Professor of Education at Mankato State University and Texas Tech University.
Together they raised two sons and built a family that was a model for their neighborhood and their community. Devout Methodists, they were active members of Centenary Methodist Church in Mankato, University Methodist Church in Lubbock, Texas, and Tarrytown Methodist Church in Austin, Texas.
Helen was a devoted wife, a loving mother, and a reliable friend. A child of the Depression, she had a knack for thrift and resourcefulness. She had a keen mind, a big heart, and a clever sense of humor. An open minded and progressive thinker, she was a compassionate and creative problem solver. She supported her family and friends no matter what the situation. A gracious person, she was dearly loved and will be missed by many.
Helen is survived by her son John and daughter-in-law Deborah of Albuquerque, son Tom and daughter-in-law Nina of Santa Fe, and her grandchildren Charles of Newport Beach, Christopher of Round Rock, Texas, Dylan of Baltimore, and Anna of Albuquerque.
Graveside services in the Garden City Cemetery are planned for December 2nd. The family requests that any memorials be sent to the Cornerstone Methodist Church of Lake Crystal, Minnesota.
