Francis "Barney"'s Story
Age 96, of Roseville, passed away peacefully on March 1, 2018. Known to all as Barney for his childhood love of the Barney Google comic, he grew up in Mankato and graduated from Loyola High School and then answered the call for World War II. At Hickam Field in Hawaii, Francis served as a Flight Officer and radar operator on a P-61 Black Widow night fighter. Often joking that he had spent the war "guarding pineapples," the Japanese surrendered one week before Francis was due to ship out to the front lines.
After the war, Francis graduated from the St. Paul College of Law. In 1951, he married Bernette "Betty" Kemen in St. Paul and started a family. He joined Mutual Service Insurance and worked there 33 years as Senior Claims Counsel until his retirement in 1984. His post-retirement years were spent volunteering at the Knights of Columbus, working in the yard, and enjoying his many grandchildren. Francis will be remembered for his love of family, playful sense of humor, bouncing grandbabies on his knee, and a spirit of adventure on long trips with a Starcraft travel trailer.
Francis is survived by his wife of 66 years, Betty; children Thomas (Cara), Joan Chinn (Bill), Mark (Brenda), Daniel (Colette) and Patrick (Amy); and 14 grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his sister Georgia Hagen, infant brothers George and Walter, and parents George and Otillia.
A visitation will be held at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 2048 Hamline Ave. N., Roseville on Wednesday, March 7, at 9:00 a.m. followed at 10:00 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will follow at Roselawn Cemetery in Roseville.
