Eugene "Gene" McMonagle was born to Clara (Pahl) and Harry McMonagle on August 25,1926 in Vernon Center, MN. Gene went to school in Vernon Center and Garden City, and left home at 16 ½ to go to work on the Alaskan Highway. With his country calling, he came home and joined the Army, and served in Korea during WWII. He was a very proud WWII Veteran. After receiving his honorable discharge from the Army, he returned to Vernon Center and married Helen Larkin from Madelia on November 11th, 1947. This past year they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. They farmed for 50 years, most of which in the Madelia area.
Did he love his family? You bet he did! Other things he loved: McDonalds, Butterfingers, pie, car auctions, and Arizona in the winter (he really hated cold weather). Gene was a man of great service to his community, serving on both the Garden City and the Madelia School Boards, The LaSalle Farmers Grain Elevator Board, and the VFW Post 3842 board.
Gene is survived by his wife, Helen; children, Philip (Kathie), Tom (Karen), Katie, Tim, and John; 11 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 brothers, Ralph and Joseph; 3 sisters, Marie Cooper, Luella Roberts, and Barbra Peterson.
He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
