Elisabeth Morse, born Elisabeth Hoekstra on November 8 th , 1925 in Venezuela, died at age 91 on October 11 th in Mankato. The funeral services will be held at Tivoli Cemetary, County Road 183, Blue Earth County, on Saturday 14 th at 11am. Luncheon will be served afterwards at the deceased's residence.
Elisabeth spent the first part of her life in the Netherlands, married to the father of her three children, Tatjana Durand, Corinne Dettmeijer and Robert Vermeulen. Growing up in a Europe at war and a country occupied by the Germans had a huge impact on her life. Right after the war, at age 19, she married Hans Vermeulen, whom she divorced after seventeen years of marriage but whom she has always considered as one of her best friends. A sentiment that marked her: forgiving and loyal. She went to Chili, at the age of 26, the youngest of her children being only six weeks old. She loved it there. Back in the Netherlands she decided she wanted a career of her own and started teaching Dutch at the American Embassy in the Hague, followed by teaching assignments at the German and the British Embassy. But it was at the American Embassy that she lost her heart to Ken Morse, a good looking Captain of the Navy, the US Military Attaché to the Netherlands. He became teacher's pet, they got married and her adventure in the US started. Ken had made her the promise to show her all the 50 states of the US and he did. She lived in four states, Rhode Island, New York, Minnesota, North Carolina and back to Mankato, Minnesota.
She was a fun, vivacious, involved mother. Young too, even at 91. She was a beautiful woman, in the Mad Men era. She glowed. Apart from her children, she also left seven grandsons and two granddaughters. And one great granddaughter and two great grandsons. Part of her family lives in the Netherlands, part in the US. She saw all of them regularly, and just about 10 days before her death she spent two weeks in the Hague, quite an adventure for a woman her age, but she really wanted to be at the wedding of her granddaughter in Amsterdam. We were so proud of her. And she so loved it. She lived a full, loving and loved life. She was ready.
Elisabeth was preceded in death by her husband Ken Morse, and two brothers Robert Hoekstra, Peter Hoekstra.
She is survived by her children: Tatjana Durand (Dennis Durand), Corrine Dettmeijer (Joost Dettmeijer), Robert Vermeulen (Marja Maria deIongh) grandchildren Adrian Durand (Carrie Mesrobian), Brian Durand (Jenn Durand), Christiaan Durand, Devin Durand (Zoe Durand), Joost Dettmeijer (Ashley Magers), Robert Jan Dettmeijer (Liesbeth Potuijt), Nienke Dettmeijer, Eward Vermeulen (Alba Miranda Galicia), Elianne Vermeulen (Henry Greaves), great-grandchildren Matilda, Patrick, Boyd
