Events

Dawn McGerrow Herzberg, 88, long-time resident of Three Springs, PA, passed away quietly with her family beside her on Saturday evening, August 10, 2019, at Misericordia Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center in York, PA. She had been in declining health for the past year. Born February 20, 1931, in Puunene, Maui, Hawaii, she was the daughter of Samuel V. and Grace Yuen McGerrow. She grew up on the island of Maui, until she and her parents moved to Honolulu at the beginning of WWII. After the war, she moved with her army officer father and mother to Tokyo, Japan. Following that the family was transferred to Fort Myers, Virginia, where she completed high school, attended the Washington School for Secretaries, and met her husband, Chauncey Herzberg, Jr, of Mankato, MN. The two were wed October 4, 1951, in Mankato. The family moved to Three Springs in 1968. Her beloved husband preceded her in death in 2000.

Dawn was employed for many years as a secretary in the science department of Juniata College, Huntingdon, PA, from which she retired in 1998. She was active in college affairs, and played in the recorder group, Moore Street Pro Musica. She had been a member of the local social sorority Beta Sigma Phi and had been active with the Girl Scouts of America as a scout leader. She was a member of the Cassville Lutheran Church and greatly enjoyed the fellowship of the folks there. She also enjoyed music playing several instruments, art, crafts, jigsaw and crossword puzzles, reading, flower arranging, and liked to share these passions with her children. She was a stickler for correct grammar usage, and also liked to pass along corrections, contributing to the good grammar of her children. As well, she passed along to her family a love and pride of Hawaiian and Chinese heritage and a love of Hawaii as "home."

She is survived by a brother, Richard McGerrow, of Honolulu, HI; three children, Victoria L. Herzberg of Bloomfield, NJ, Valerie Ford and her husband David of Three Springs, PA, and Kurt Herzberg and his wife Delores of Dover, PA; three grandchildren, Adam Herzberg, Logan Herzberg, and Laura Herzberg Harper; and three great-grandchildren, Addyson, Declan and soon to arrive Gracelynn. In Minnesota are generations of her husband's side of the family by his previously deceased sister, Jean Frank, Waseca, who still live and thrive there. Jean's children are Bruce Frank, New Richland, Barbara Frank Backstrom, Blue Earth, and Julie Frank, Waseca.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM, on Tuesday, September 3, 2019, at the First Baptist Church of Three Springs, PA, with her son, Pastor Kurt Herzberg, and her son-in-law, Rev. David Ford, officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Cassville Lutheran Church, in care of Kathie Ramsey, 17740 New Fording Rd, Todd, PA, 16685.
