A celebration of life service for Charlie Grunewald, 56, of Fairmont, MN, will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 18, 2017, at the United Methodist Church in Fairmont. Burial will be following the service in the Lakeside Cemetery with full military honors by the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post #36 and the Martin County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1222. Visitation will be 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, August 17, 2017, at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont and will continue one hour prior to the time of service at the church. Charlie passed away Sunday morning, August 13, 2017, at the Mayo Clinic Health Systems in Fairmont. The Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.
Ernest C. Charlie Grunewald was born on August 3, 1961, in Windom, MN, the son of Ernest and Mary (Ingraham) Grunewald. He attended Windom Schools, and later enlisted with the Minnesota National Guard where he served his country proudly earning his honorable discharge. He would go on to attend Jackson Vocational College where he earned his degree in automotive body.
Charlie loved working with his hands and was known for his hard work ethic. He worked in construction for many years doing underground utilities and was most recently a supervisor for Rehnelt Excavating.
On March 31, 2001, Charlie was united in marriage to the love of his life, Julie Sorenson in Fairmont, MN. Together the couple made their home on an acreage outside of Fairmont and later moved to their home on the lake. Charlie and Julie were blessed with 16 years of marriage.
Charlie loved life and truly lived it to the fullest. He was extremely passionate about his family and treasured memories made with family and friends on snowmobile trips to the mountains out west. He loved the feel of the open road and jumped at the chance to spend the day cruising on his Harley. Charlie was never one to sit and let time pass him by and cherished any opportunity to be out hunting or fishing. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Fairmont and volunteered his time with CREST and also as a mentor with Kinship. His zest for life and his infectious laugh and smile will be greatly missed by those that loved him and called him a friend.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Julie Grunewald; children, Ernest (Crystel) Grunewald V, Bridgette Grunewald, and Ethan Grunewald; grandchildren, Kelsey, Alivia, Anistasia, Gavin, and Samarah; parents, Ernest (LaRae) Grunewald and Mary Ingraham; siblings, Jean (Douglas) Grunewald, Kevin (Donna) Grunewald, Shawn (Lisa) Licht, Lila Christensen, Brian Grunewald, Angie Knopf, and Travis Grunewald; in-laws, Stephen (Marsha) Sorenson; nephew, Steven (Julie) Fields; as well as many other extended family and friends.
