Charles Heaberlin, age 92, Mankato, died unexpectedly Thursday, December 21, 2017 at his home. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Thursday, December 28, 2017 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Rev. Jay Dahlvang officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at Woodland Hills Funeral Home and will continue one hour before services at the church. Interment will be in Woodland Hills Memorial Park.
Chuck was born October 1, 1925 to Edith and George Heaberlin in Minneapolis. Chuck married Lorene Smith on September 10, 1949 at Arlington Hills Lutheran Church in St. Paul. They were married 62 years. He had 23 jobs before he decided to work for himself. Together he and Lorene owned and operated former Team Electronics stores in Mankato and Owatonna. Chuck retired at 2:15pm on September 15, 1988 and adjusted to retirement by 2:25pm. He served in the United States Air Corp Air Transport Command in the Pacific in Papua New Guinea and Gaum. Chuck was a member of Mankato Downtown Kiwanis for over 50 years. Chuck had many interests in life including: traveling, cooking, and raising perfect tomatoes. He waterskied until he was 73 and sailed until he was 80. He was still an active member of Bethlehem Lutheran, the Bullshippers, card club, Lifelong Learners, and VINE.
He is survived by five daughters, Terry Halter of McLean, VA, Gail Heaberlin-Giersdorf of North Mankato, Nancy Heaberlin of Bozeman, MT, Sandi (Ross) Lubrant of Robbinsdale, MN and Michele (Larry) Nydegger of Ellendale, MN; eight grandchildren, Hannah and Asher Giersdorf, Kelly Heaberlin, Ryan Hixson, Courtney Lubrant and Whitney (Cory) Hunter, Daniel and Evelyn Nydegger; great granddaughter, Harper Hunter; and many nieces and nephews.
Chuck was preceded in death by his wife, Lorene, parents, son, George, son-in-law, Dave Giersdorf; brother, Howie Heaberlin; sisters, Helen Lofroth and Joan Sunde; sister in-law, Marge Heaberlin; brother-and sister-in-law, Leo and Ann Crisman; and niece Patty Dandl.
Memorials are preferred to Bethlehem Lutheran, Kiwanis - Camp Patterson, or ACT on Alzheimer's c/o Minnesota River Area Agency on Aging.
We echo Evelyn "My grandpa is, to me, an extraordinary man." We hit the jackpot when we got him.
