Betty Jean Barker (1924-2018)
Betty Jean Barker, 93, passed peacefully from this life on January 24, 2018, at Benedictine Living Community in St. Peter, MN. She was born on August 3, 1924, in Algona, Iowa, to Lloyd and Lucille (Blacketer) Strohman. Blessed with an extraordinary singing voice, a very young Betty sang with her sisters in churches and on the radio. As a high school student in Wisconsin she won numerous solo vocal competitions. A woman of faith, she shared her gift of song with many church congregations. Following high school graduation in Marshfield, Wisconsin, she began a career that included retail and healthcare management positions. A devoted and loving mother, grandmother, sister and aunt, Betty was preceded in death by sister Miriam and brother-in-law Walter Ternberg, and sister Daisy and brother-in-law Stanley Neubert. She leaves to mourn her passing a daughter, Peggy Chown, son-in-law David Chown, granddaughters Kristen and Erin Bunch, and several nieces and nephews.
Betty cherished annual family vacations to Bay Lake and, after many attempts at waterskiing, became resigned to the fact that she could part the water better than Moses! She never met a dog she didn't love, and had several over the course of her life. She had a wonderful sense of humor and was never one to turn away a plate of shrimp linguine and cheddar bay biscuits from her favorite seafood restaurant.
A private celebration of life is planned for a later date. Those wishing to honor Betty's life are asked to consider making a donation to the Benedictine Living Community in St. Peter, Parkinson's research, or the animal shelter of their choice.
